SUMMARY:AI Solutions to Tackle 21st Century Challenges in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The AgAID Institute: AI Solutions to Tackle 21st Century Challenges in Agriculture \nThe AgAID Institute is a recently awarded National AI Institute led by Washington State University with OSU serving as the AI-lead organization involving over 13 OSU researchers. The goals of the institute are to study new and existing AI techniques for addressing some of the most challenging problems facing today’s farmers\, with a focus on specialty crops such as grapes\, apples\, cherries\, nuts\, etc. This talk will give a high-level introduction to the institute by reviewing the main research thrusts of Labor\, Farm Operations\, and Water Management. In addition\, we will highlight some of the early projects and results that are underway. Finally\, we will look ahead and discuss near-term and longer-term plans for the institute. \nSpeaker: Alan Fern\, Professor\, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, Oregon State University. \nZoom link: https://beav.es/tech-talk \nPacific Time / USA \n

SUMMARY:Systematic Inclusive Design
DESCRIPTION:Systematic Inclusive Design: From GenderMag to SocioeconomicMag \nHow can software professionals systematically assess whether their software supports diverse users? And if they find problems\, how can they fix them?  Our team’s prior research revealed software’s failures to support different genders’ user experiences equitably and then produced the GenderMag method to address this problem\, which is now in use around the world. Today we present our research toward a new method\, SocioeconomicMag\, to help improve software’s equitability across socioeconomically diverse users. SocioeconomicMag is just emerging\, and we are actively looking for field collaborators to try it out in the field. \nSpeaker: Margaret Burnett\, Professor\, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, Oregon State University. \nMargaret is part of the AgAID Team – learn more about what Margaret does and the role it plays in AgAID’s research. \nZoom link: https://beav.es/tech-talk \nPacific Time / USA \n

SUMMARY:AgTech - Lots of Promise\, but Why do Growers care?
DESCRIPTION:Steve is the founder of innov8.ag\, a Walla Walla-based agtech startup and Microsoft-partnered company.  Prior to embarking on the startup\, Steve spent 12 years at Microsoft with a focus on cloud services. He envisions Walla Walla as the perfect base for ag startups given the convergence of progressive farmers and three colleges with strengths in agriculture\, engineering\, science\, established ag manufacturers\, strong connectivity providers\, and a highly collaborative business climate. An Australian by birth\, Steve has his MBA from the University of Washington. \nZoom Meeting ID: 971 3017 4996 \nMeeting Passcode: 790378

SUMMARY:The AgAID Institute for Transforming Workforce and Decision Support in Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The newly established AgAID Institute\, led by Washington State University\, is a multi-institution\, transdisciplinary coalition that will build partnerships between the Institute’s core members (six universities\, two community/4-year colleges\, and two tech companies) and a diverse range of key stakeholder groups. The overall approach will be guided by a cross-cutting mantra of adopt-adapt-amplify\, i.e.\, adoption as a first principle in AI design\, adaptability to changing environments and scales\, and amplification of human skills and machine efficiency. Activities will include: using agricultural AI applications as testbeds for developing innovative AI technologies and workflows; serving as a nexus for culturally inclusive collaborative transdisciplinary learning and knowledge co-production; preparing the next generation workforce for careers at the intersection of Ag and AI technology\, and facilitating technology adoption and transfer. \nZOOM Link\nZoom ID: 6152579133\nPassword: 2021 \nFor more information visit: https://pprc.uga.edu/seminars/
